My research is grounded in personal experience of migration and diaspora as a woman of mixed-race descent. Research for my studio practice explores the metaphor of Water Over Skin. My quest for identity is a journey resembling water that flows over lines of demarcation. I see the female body, a recurring theme, inscribed within personal, psychological and physical boundaries involving landscape, domesticity, clothing. Imagery is appropriated from Indian art and mythology, colonial history, family photographs from India and England. The work incorporates text from my own writing and a created language based on Hindustani script. The exegesis embraces an interdisciplinary approach including history, cultural studies and autobiography. Issues of difference both racial and cultural focus the research around key themes of shame, the third space' of hybridity, race and gender. Referring to autobiographical elements, the transformation from a political assimilationist perspective is explored, deeply shaped by personal shame. Grounded in postmodernism and postcolonialism the exegesis draws on wide ranging theoretical perspectives to provide a framework and context for my studio practice.

Rising from Deep Places

Elena Stone's provocative study of a diverse group of grassroots activists and artists gives new dimensions to a question that has long been an underlying theme in feminist scholarship: how do women find their voices? In this book that interweaves sociological analysis with personal experience, women's history, and imagery from myth, religion, and the natural world, that question expands to encompass the very meaning of voice itself. Stone's interviews, primarily with African-American, white working-class, and Jewish women, offer fresh and creative perspectives on gender, race, class, and culture. The resulting chapters explore the many faces of silence and examine the meaning of voice in relation to living in a body, building community, seeking justice, creating art, and affirming one's connection with the earth. What emerges is a powerful new vision of women's development that blends notions of personal and social transformation with a growing ecological and spiritual consciousness.

Cognition and Tool Use

In Cognition and Tool Use, anthropologists Janet and Charles Keller provide an account of human accomplishment based on ethnographic study. Blacksmithing, the transformation of glowing iron into artistic and utilitarian products, is the activity they chose to develop a study of situated learning. This domain, permeated by visual imagery and physical virtuosity rather than verbal logic, appears antithetical to the usual realms of cognitive study. For this reason, it provides a new entree to human thought and an empirical test for an anthropology of knowledge. How does a mind in practice approach a stable, 'sedimented' body of knowledge and create something truly original? What does human tool use say about human thought? What does someone need to know to successfully produce a material artifact and how do they learn it? In addressing these questions, the authors offer an interdisciplinary perspective on the principled creativity of human behaviour.

Ana Mendieta: Traces
54,90 CHF *

During her short career, Ana Mendieta (1948-85) created a body of work that was provocative and radically inventive. Using her own body, together with elemental materials--blood, fire, earth and water--she created visceral tableaux and ephemeral 'earth-body' sculptures exploring life, death, rebirth and spiritual transformation. Much of her art also expresses the pain and rupture of cultural displacement and exile (Mendieta was born in Cuba, but sent to the US as a child). In her work, the outline of her body is consumed by gunpowder, fireworks, or advancing waves; and ancient goddess-forms are shaped from sand, carved into rock or incised into clay or onto leaves. The media are exceptionally diverse, but the images are consistently compelling, mysterious and poetic. Encompassing a wealth of drawings, photography and film, 'Ana Mendieta: Traces 'provides a comprehensive and illuminating overview of this highly influential artist's work. Essays by art historians Julia Bryan-Wilson and Adrian Heathfield, as well as Stephanie Rosenthal, Chief Curator at Hayward Gallery, provide an array of new approaches to Mendieta's practice. This publication also includes a wide-ranging and richly illustrated anthology of never-before-seen material, including Mendieta's own notebooks, exhibition plans and correspondence, the result of unparalleled access to the Ana Mendieta Archive. Filled with new imagery, ephemera and scholarship, 'Ana Mendieta: Traces' provides a comprehensive introduction to this major twentieth-century artist, as essential for Mendieta experts as for those coming to her work for the first time.
